 A planned road extension in Kyle being touted as a sensible traffic solution may also prevent HEB's big-box competitors from ensconcing themselves in a highly desirable location.

The planned extension would connect FM 150 West with FM 150 East through a parcel of land just east of I-35 and currently owned by San Antonio-based H.E. Butt Grocery Co. and Austin-based developer Barshop & Oles. The two companies bought the 38 acres at FM 150 and I-35 in 2002.

The University of Texas System has announced the members of a task force that will study how land should be used in Austin's Brackenridge tract.

The 350-acre site runs along Town Lake west of downtown off Lake Austin Boulevard. It currently includes a municipal golf course, student housing, a biological field laboratory and leased commercial spaces. The landlocked, flagship UT campus in Central Austin is extremely limited for future development. University leaders have long pointed to the Brackenridge tract as a prime site for UT's potential growth.

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (H-E-B) is planning to develop a new H-E-B Plus grocery store in Kyle, Texas -- the company's first in the city.
The San Antonio-based grocer will begin construction on the Plus store this summer at the northwest corner of Interstate Highway 35 and FM 1626. The store is expected to open by the summer of 2007.

 Investment fund The Blackstone Group agreed Wednesday to buy La Quinta Corp., a hotel chain founded by San Antonio businessman Sam Barshop, for $3.4 billion.

The Blackstone Group will pay shareholders of Dallas-based La Quinta (NYSE: LQI) $11.25 in cash. This represents a 37 percent premium over La Quinta's Tuesday closing price of $8.22 a share.

Four land deals totaling 209 acres closed at I-35 and Chandler Road in Round Rock, the seller said Thursday.

The deals clear the way for developments by Simon Property Group Inc., Barshop & Oles Co. Inc. and Scott & White to begin, according to the land's seller, Newland Communities LLC.
